Saranac Island (49˚15'00" 125˚54'00" NW of Meares I, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). The 10-gun US warship Saranac, named after a river in NY state, was launched in 1848 at the Portsmouth navy yard in Maine. The 1,950-tonne, 66-m paddle sloop served in S America and the Mediterranean before being transferred to the Pacific coast in 1857 for use as a patrol vessel.
