Shaft Point (49˚11'00" 123˚57'00" W side of Newcastle I, Nanaimo Hbr, SE side of Vancouver I). Newcastle I is riddled with old coal-mining shafts. The HBC realized in the early 1850s that the entire Nanaimo region was rich in coal, and mining took place on the island from 1853 to 1883.
