Slag Point


Slag Point (49˚00'00" 123˚48'00" W side of Ladysmith Hbr, SE of Nanaimo, SE side of Vancouver I). An alternative name for this feature in the early 1900s was Slack Point, because the land there had been partly created out of coal slack, deposited in the vicinity when Ladysmith was an important port for the Dunsmuir collieries. “Slack,” or “sleck,” refers to the dust and fine screenings from a coal mine; it is undesirable as fuel as it normally contains a good deal of slate and dirt....
