Striae Islands


Striae Islands (54˚05'00" 132˚15'00" W side of McIntyre Bay, off mouth of the Otun R, N side of Graham I, QCI). Named by geologist George M Dawson in 1878 for their striated appearance. “Striae,” in geological terms, are narrow grooves or scratches worn into the surface of rocks when other rocks or fragments have been dragged over them by glaciers. The outer Striae island is called Gway-tu-wuns, or “unfinished island,” by the Haida people, according to QCI historian Kathleen Dalzell....
