Sunderland Channel


Sunderland Channel (50˚28'00" 125˚53'00" N of Hardwicke I and Johnstone Str, NW of Campbell R). After RN officer John Wellbore Sunderland Spencer, on the Pacific Station in 1859–63. See Spencer Ledge. Spanish explorer Dionisio Alcalá-Galiano stopped here in 1792 and called his anchorage the Fondeadero de Bauza, after Felipe Bauzá, cartographer on Alejandro Malaspina’s expedition of 1789–94.
