Sykes Island


Sykes Island (49˚49'00" 124˚05'00" St Vincent Bay, Jervis Inlet, NW of Vancouver). Named by Capt George Richards of HMS Plumper about 1860 after John Sykes (c 1760–1841), an RN seaman and coxswain, and a faithful follower of Adm Lord Nelson. Sykes was present at most of Nelson’s great victories and was seriously injured at Cadiz after the 1797 Battle of Cape St Vincent while protecting Nelson in fierce hand-to-hand fighting.
