Thorndike Shoal


Thorndike Shoal (51˚19'00" 127˚50'00" Between Irving Passage and Radar Passage, entrance to Smith Sd, NW of Port Hardy). This feature was probably named for the schooner Thorndike (often written Thorndyke), which was attacked by a Lekwiltok First Nation group in 1863 while sailing N through Johnstone Str. Some crew members were apparently rescued by the crew of another schooner, the Nanaimo Packet, while others were killed. One suspected perpetrator, Quamish, was tried at Nanaimo in 1865....
