Tortoise Islets (48˚43'00" 123˚22'00" Off SE Portland I, NE of N end of Saanich Peninsula, Gulf Is). The origin of this name, which appears on an 1861 Admiralty chart, is uncertain, though it has been suggested that HMS Tortoise was the source. This seems unlikely, though, as the venerable Tortoise—which was built for the E India Co in 1789 and spent much of its life as an RN coal hulk, convict transport and store ship at Ascension I—was never anywhere near the PNW.
