Turnback Point

Turnback Point (50˚25'00" 125˚08'00" N end of Stuart I, SE entrance to Arran Rapids, N entrance to Bute Inlet, N of Campbell R). A note at BC’s Geographical Names Office states that this name has its origins in the fact that boats attempting a western passage through the Arran Rapids against the tide are usually forced to turn back at this point. It could just as easily be a warning message, however, to unwary mariners. Currents in the Arran Rapids can reach 9 knots (17 km/h).
