Ursus Point (52˚29'00" 128˚13'00" N entrance to Salmon Bay, Mathieson Channel, W side of Don Peninsula, N of Bella Bella). Ursus is the Latin word for bear, and Bear Point was the former name of this feature. It was changed by the hydrographic service in 1948. More than 90 official place names in BC feature the word “bear,” so, naturally, duplication has been quite an issue over the years. Even the word “ursus” has found its way into six other official BC place names.
