Welcome Beach (49˚29'00" 123˚54'00" E side of Welcome Passage), Welcome Passage (49˚30'00" 123˚56'00" Between Thormanby Is and SW end of Sechelt Peninsula, Str of Georgia, NW of Vancouver). In 1860, Capt George Richards, who was conducting a coastal survey with HMS Plumper, applied a number of horse-racing names in this vicinity. He and his officers appear to have been betting men, as they “welcomed” the news that the racehorse Thormanby had won the famous Epsom Derby earlier that year....
