Wurtele Island


Wurtele Island (52˚10'00" 128˚30'00" Off SW end of Athlone I, Milbanke Sd, W of Bella Bella). Named in 1944 after Cdr Alfred Charles Wurtele (1897–2000) of the RCN, who served on the W coast, 1932–39, and was CO at the HMCS Naden shore establishment during WWII. Born at Kingston, Ont, he became a cadet at the Royal Naval College of Canada in 1913 and, as a sub-lt aboard HMS Swift, was present in 1918 at the surrender of the German fleet.
