AIRPORTS in BC, as in the rest of Canada, have been transferred from the responsibility of Transport Canada to new airport authorities regulated by local government. There are more than 150 land- and water-based airports and heliports in the province. VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT is the largest airport; it handles more than 87% of passengers travelling on scheduled services through BC. VICTORIA's is the second busiest airport in BC, with 4% of travellers; passenger traffic at the Victoria airport reached 1.3 million in 2005. KELOWNA has BC's third-busiest international airport, with 1,078,800 passengers in 2005. The fourth international aiport is at ABBOTSFORD, where passenger traffic exceeded 500,000 in 2006. There are another 15 airports with regularly scheduled local and regional service and connections to Vancouver International for longer flights. Of these, the busiest is at PRINCE GEORGE.
