Crown Corporations

CROWN CORPORATIONS (provincial) are corporate entities established or acquired by the provincial government to provide services not furnished by the private sector. Though accountable to the relevant government department, they are not subject to direct government control and enjoy greater administrative autonomy than a government department. Some Crown corporations are financially independent, generating revenues from the sale of services and paying their own operating expenses, while others receive a degree of government financial assistance.

Crown corporations are responsible for many of the public services British Columbians have come to take for granted, including the generation and transmission of electricity (BC HYDRO), and the provision of auto insurance (INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BC) and public transit (BC TRANSIT).
