Ah-Chee-Wun

AH-CHEE-WUN was a legendary Coast Salish chief, leader of the Lemalchi people who lived on KUPER ISLAND opposite CHEMAINUS in the mid-19th century (see SALISHAN FIRST NATIONS). A fearsome warrior believed by some to have supernatural powers, he opposed the entry of non-aboriginals into his territory. In Apr 1863, 3 white people were murdered in the GULF ISLANDS.
