Chemainus

CHEMAINUS, town, pop 3,900, overlooks Stuart Channel on the east side of VANCOUVER ISLAND, between DUNCAN and NANAIMO. It is the main community in the district municipality of NORTH COWICHAN. The first farm settler, J.A. Grahames, arrived in the area in 1858; several others followed the next year. LOGGING became important and several SAWMILLS have operated here since 1862.
