ALBERNI, Pedro de, army officer (b 30 Jan 1747, Tortosa, Spain; d 11 Mar 1802, Monterey, CA). He arrived in New Spain with the Company of Catalonian Volunteers and became commanding officer in 1783. In 1789 Spain decided to establish a post in NOOTKA SOUND; Alberni led 76 soldiers accompanying Francisco ELIZA to Friendly Cove, arriving in April 1790.
