ATHALMER is a community at the north end of Windermere Lk in the Columbia Valley, 130 km north of CRANBROOK. An early wagon road between GOLDEN and FORT STEELE forded the COLUMBIA R at this point, and a store, tavern and SAWMILL were built around 1900. Athalmer is now a suburb of INVERMERE. The name means "noble lake" in Anglo-Saxon; F.W. Aylmer, who laid out the townsite, chose it in homage to his own surname.
