AVISON, John Henry Patrick, musician (b 25 Apr 1915, Vancouver; d 30 Nov 1983, Vancouver). He was a prodigy as a young pianist, and went on to study at UBC, the Univ of Washington and the Juilliard School. He was 23 years old in 1938, when Ira DILWORTH hired him to lead the newly formed CBC VANCOUVER ORCHESTRA, a position Avison held for the next 42 years until his retirement in 1980. He was named to the Order of Canada in 1978.
