BARRIERE, pop 1,653, is on the N THOMPSON R 63 km north of KAMLOOPS. It was named by FUR TRADERS either for the rocks in the river that blocked navigation or because it was a place where FIRST NATIONS people built fish weirs (see FISHING, ABORIGINAL). LOGGING and AGRICULTURE are the mainstays of the local economy.
