BERYL G was a fish packer used to haul liquor illegally across the border into the US during Prohibition in the 1920s (see RUM-RUNNERS). On 16 Sept 1924 it was discovered floating near SIDNEY ISLAND. No one was on board and the cabin was smeared with blood. A police investigation led to charges against 3 Americans known to be involved in the liquor traffic and suspected of murdering the vessel's captain, William Gillis, and his teenage son. The accused were found guilty; 2 of them were hanged...
