Blakeburn

BLAKEBURN is an abandoned COAL mining town on Granite Crk northwest of PRINCETON. The mine was established in 1911, and coal was carried by aerial tramway to the railhead at nearby COALMONT. The camp at the mine was named for the principal owners, W.J. Blake-Wilson and Pat Burns, the meat-packing king and senator. In 1930 an explosion in the mine killed 45 men, one of the worst mine DISASTERS in BC history. After operating through the Depression, the mine closed in 1940 and residents moved away.
