BURGOYNE BAY, 42 km north of VICTORIA on southern SALTSPRING ISLAND in the GULF ISLANDS, is at the west end of a gentle, fertile valley. John Maxwell and James Lunney established a cattle ranch (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) here in 1860 and other settlers soon followed. There was a wharf by 1869 and a post office by 1880.
