Buttle Lake


BUTTLE LAKE, 31 sq km, is a long (29 km), narrow lake surrounded by mountains in the central interior of VANCOUVER ISLAND, west of CAMPBELL RIVER in STRATHCONA PROVINCIAL PARK. It is named for John James Buttle, a ROYAL ENGINEER who was part of the 1864 VANCOUVER ISLAND EXPLORING EXPEDITION. He was thought to have been the first white person to visit the lake, in 1865, though later it appeared unlikely that he did so.
