CARY CASTLE was the original name for Government House, the official residence of the LT GOV in VICTORIA. The first Cary Castle was built in the 1860s as the home of George Hunter CARY, attorney general of VANCOUVER ISLAND. It was sold to the Crown in 1865 as a residence for the colonial governor, and when BC became a province in 1871 it became the home of the lt gov.
