CASSIDY is an abandoned COAL mining town 13 km south of NANAIMO on VANCOUVER ISLAND. It was built in 1918 by the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting & Power Co, the same year the company opened a mine at the site to produce coal to fuel its COPPER SMELTER at ANYOX. Unlike most MINING camps, it was a planned community with company-built bungalows on wide lots, parks and landscaped roadways. The mine closed in 1932. A few years later the buildings were auctioned.
