COMOX, town, pop 12,136 (2006), overlooks GEORGIA STRAIT on the east side of VANCOUVER ISLAND, 4 km east along Comox Harbour from COURTENAY. The name derives from a Kwakwala (see KWAKWAKA'WAKW) word meaning "plenty." The site was used by the Royal Navy as a training location from the 1850s.
