COOPER, Michael, aboriginal leader (b Nov 1865, San Juan Island; d 10 Jan 1936, Victoria). His father was an English military officer stationed on SAN JUAN ISLAND (see also PIG WAR); his mother was a LEKWAMMEN (Songhees) woman from the VICTORIA area. Cooper worked for 27 years at a fish cannery owned by J.H. TODD. In 1894 he became the first chief of the Lekwammen elected under the provisions of the Indian Act, and he remained chief until he resigned because of ill health in 1935. A prominent...
