EXTENSION, pop 234, a small residential community southwest of NANAIMO, was the site of one of the DUNSMUIR family's COAL mines. After MINING began in 1897, coal was shipped by rail to the wharves at LADYSMITH. Much of the town was wrecked by rioters during the 1913 strike, but it rallied and survived until 1931; that year the mine closed and most residents moved away.
