FALKLAND, pop 747, is a small community in the SALMON R valley 45 km northwest of VERNON. The valley was on the FUR BRIGADES route running northwest from OKANAGAN LK and later attracted farm settlers, one of whom was Falkland Warren, a retired English colonel. It was the site of the largest gypsum mine in BC, in full production from 1925 to 1956 and still used occasionally by the late 1990s (see also MINING). LOGGING, mixed AGRICULTURE and the CATTLE INDUSTRY are the main economic activities....
