SALMON RIVER rises in the mountains of STRATHCONA PROVINCIAL PARK on VANCOUVER ISLAND and flows northerly for 74 km to empty into JOHNSTONE STRAIT at KELSEY BAY, near SAYWARD north of CAMPBELL RIVER. It is said to have the largest STEELHEAD on the Island. The ESTUARY supports a wide variety of winter waterfowl, including trumpeter SWANS, and has been set aside as a wildlife reserve.
