FERNIE, city, pop 4,611, has been a COAL mining centre since it was founded in 1898. Located in the Elk Valley of southeastern BC and nestled among the snow-capped ROCKY MTS, it is 52 km from the Alberta border in the CROWSNEST PASS area. William FERNIE, the founder, was a prospector, railway promoter and one of the organizers of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Co.
