FLAG was adopted by provincial order-in-council 20 June 1960. It features the central shield from the provincial COAT OF ARMS, adopted in 1895. The Union Jack on top evokes the British connection; the setting half-sun symbolizes BC's location as Canada's westernmost province; and the 3 wavy bars suggest the Pacific Ocean.
