GARCIA, Jesus, packer, rancher (b 1846, Mexico; d Jan 1916, Merritt). After working as a mule packer in California he arrived in BC about 1861 and began running pack trains on the CARIBOO WAGON ROAD between YALE and the CARIBOO goldfields (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO). He wintered his animals in the NICOLA Valley and in 1872 he pre-empted land at the site of what is now MERRITT.
