Genoa Bay

GENOA BAY is a small harbour on the north side of COWICHAN BAY east of DUNCAN on southern VANCOUVER ISLAND. It was named in 1858 by Giovanni Ordano, a maritime trader and early settler, after his Italian birthplace. From the 1870s to 1925 a sawmill operated, cutting timber from COWICHAN LK; at one time it was the largest mill in the Cowichan Valley. A small seaside community now sits in the shadow of Mt Tzuhalem, named for a fearsome COWICHAN warrior chief, and a marina welcomes boaters.
