GRANT, Walter Colquhoun, pioneer settler, founder of Sooke (b 27 May 1822, Edinburgh, Scotland; d 27 Aug 1861, India). In 1848 he left the British Army and purchased 80 ha of land near FORT VICTORIA from the HBC. He agreed to establish settlers on the land and the HBC hired him as a surveyor to make maps of VANCOUVER ISLAND. In Aug 1849 he arrived at Fort Victoria to join the 8 colonists who had preceded him.
