GRASMERE, pop 184, 70 km southeast of CRANBROOK near the Montana border, is a small LOGGING and ranching (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) community in the E KOOTENAY. Originally called McGuire after an early settler, it was renamed in 1922 from choices submitted by local schoolchildren.
