Crows Nest Southern Railway


CROWS NEST SOUTHERN RAILWAY was a branch line of James J. Hill's GREAT NORTHERN RWY, running north from the Montana border along the KOOTENAY R and up the ELK R almost to FERNIE. Opened to traffic in 1902, it was built to carry COAL from area mines south to the US market, though it also offered passenger service. In 1908 the line was extended farther up the Elk R to MICHEL.
