MICHEL was a COAL mining town in the ROCKY MTS 40 km north of FERNIE. It began in 1898 and miners lived here until the 1960s, when residents were relocated to the new community of SPARWOOD and the Michel site was demolished. Only 1 original building remained in 1999, serving as shops and offices for TECK CORP, owner of the nearby open-pit Elkview mine. Michel was named for a local KTUNAXA chief. See also MINING.
