Sparwood


SPARWOOD, district municipality, pop 3,618 (2006), is a COAL-mining centre in the ELK R Valley in the E KOOTENAY, 28 km north of FERNIE and 21 km from the Alberta border. Railway builders considered the local trees good for ships' spars, hence the name. Constructed to replace the historic MINING towns of MICHEL and NATAL, which were settled in the 1890s, Sparwood was incorporated on 12 May 1966.
