Elk River


ELK RIVER originates in ELK LAKES PROVINCIAL PARK high in the ROCKY MTS in the southeastern corner of the province. The river flows south to the KOOTENAY R system, emptying into KOOCANUSA LK south of ELKO. It is named for the herds of Rocky Mountain ELK that inhabit the area. The Elk R Valley was used seasonally by the KTUNAXA First Nation as a corridor to travel across the mountains to hunt bison on the plains.
