ELKO, pop 163, is a community on the ELK R, 31 km south of FERNIE in the southeast corner of the province. The first post office and school opened at the site in 1899. It is on the main line of the CROWSNEST PASS route of the CPR and is the southern gateway to the Elk R Valley COAL country. There is a HYDROELECTRIC power plant nearby and SAWMILLING has been the main industry.
