Guttman, Irving Allen

GUTTMAN, Irving Allen, artistic director (b 27 Oct 1928, Chatham, ON; d 7 Dec 2014, Vancouver). Widely considered to be the father of opera in western Canada, he was educated in Toronto and Montreal and began his stage-directing career in Montreal in 1953. He became the founding artistic director of the VANCOUVER OPERA in 1960 and occupied that position until 1974.
