Halkomelem


HALKOMELEM ( ) are Central Coast Salish people (see SALISHAN FIRST NATIONS) with Island and Mainland branches, the latter divided into Upriver and Downriver. Halkomelem is a single language comprised of mutually understandable dialectal forms spoken by groups along the lower FRASER R and across GEORGIA STRAIT on VANCOUVER ISLAND (see also FIRST NATIONS LANGUAGES).
