HART, John, businessman, politician, premier 9 Dec 1941–29 Dec 1947 (b 31 Mar 1879, Mohill, Ireland; d 7 Apr 1957, Victoria). He arrived in VICTORIA in 1898 and was running his own finance business when he was elected a LIBERAL MLA for Victoria in 1916. The next year he became finance minister in Harlan BREWSTER's government and occupied the post continuously until becoming PREMIER, aside from an absence from politics in 1924–33. In fall 1941 Hart endorsed a wartime COALITION GOVERNMENT....
