HASTINGS, Oregon Columbus, photographer (b 26 Apr 1846, Pontoosuc, IL; d 5 Aug 1912, Victoria). He came to VICTORIA in the 1870s and entered the photographic business, eventually opening his own studio. Mainly a portrait photographer, he was also official photographer aboard a naval survey of coastal FIRST NATIONS villages in 1879; in the 1890s he made images for the famed anthropologist Franz BOAS during Boas's visits to VANCOUVER ISLAND aboriginal communities.
