HATZIC, 65 km east of VANCOUVER on the north shore of the FRASER R, is in the municipality of MISSION. A former HBC employee named La Croix had a trading post here in the 1860s; Ralph Burton cleared the first homestead. The fertile land attracted many early settlers and fruit-growing became important. Hatzic was originally known as Well's Landing after a local pioneer. The name is HALKOMELEM and may mean "shore" or "beach."
