Hawthornthwaite, James Hurst


HAWTHORNTHWAITE, James Hurst, labour politician (b 1869, Ireland; d 1926, Victoria). After immigrating to BC in 1885, he worked as a colliery clerk at the NANAIMO coal mines, where he was a supporter of the local labour politician Ralph SMITH. Smith defected to the federal Liberal Party in 1900, and Hawthornthwaite took over his seat in the provincial legislature as a member of the Nanaimo INDEPENDENT LABOUR PARTY.
