HERON is a long-legged, long-necked wading bird distributed widely across southern BC from VANCOUVER ISLAND to the KOOTENAY. It stands over a metre in height. The heron prefers a wet, marshy habitat such as tidal flats, riverbanks, sloughs and lakeshores. It feeds in the water using its long, straight bill to catch fish, crustaceans, INSECTS and other small animals. Herons nest in colonies in trees, where they build large nests of sticks. They resemble CRANES but in flight they fold their necks...
