HILLS, George, Anglican bishop (b 26 June 1816, Eythorne, England; d 10 Dec 1895, Parham, England). He was a prominent ANGLICAN vicar in England, and in 1859 was named first bishop of the new diocese of Columbia, which included VANCOUVER ISLAND and the mainland. Charged with establishing the church on the Pacific Coast, he recruited clergy, built churches, schools and mission outposts, and raised money.
